I want to upgrade to XP. I am using (sorry) a HP 6530 with 192 MB ram and 433MHZ. Has anyone else installed XP on a similar system?? Any problems? The HP site is no help at all. They only want to cover their asses. Will XP run on a 6530?

HP never supports anything when it comes to upgrading. You upgrading releases them from the obligation. You say "i formatted" they say "good and bye"
Good news and Bad news.
good news first..
You shouldnt need any drivers as XP will have just about everything you need. Soundcard/modem might need manual driver installation.
Bad news..
finding update drivers for the soundcard/modem might be hard. Hopefully it isnt an issue.
Not good-Not bad news..
You should think about bringing your ram up to 512.
433mhz isnt too bad but it wont be spectacular running XP.
Clean install! Clean install! Clean install! See where im going with this?

I have an HP 65something (forgot what it was) but i installed xp on it and it detected everything. i didnt need to install any drivers at all. iam pretty sure that you have the same mobo so it should work ok. by the way, i gave that HP to my mom. <---hint hint

Hi Tony,
The best advice anyone can give you is for you to run the upgrade advisor. Let it look into your system and tell you what potential problems you may face after after/during an upgrade.
Print out the report and go through each item one by one. Look for driver issues, look for bios upgrade issues, and don't forget software. Pay particular attention to CDRWs and DVD drives as they can be very troublsome. Go to the following site and run the advisor.
http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
My last piece of advice is the same as Microhard's, "clean install".
Good Luck!

I have HP 6465 Pavilion dual booting Win98A and WinXP home. It installed everything except the Rockwell modem, but used the W2K drivers and installed just fine although they were not MS signature drivers i did a save restore restore point and then installed the drivers and had no problem. The restore point backup was in case things went wrong you can go back in time.

If I'm not mistaking, you have the Riptide combo card. A piece of garbage if there ever was one. Not sure about updated drivers, but if you want, you can disable the whole combo mess in the bios by turning off th on-board sound and getting a sound card and buy a good hardware modem as opposed to the whatever it is they call a modem on the Riptide card.

I upgraded my pavilion 6532 400mhz to winxp pro (that's right no clean install) and the only problem i had was with that P.O.S. rockwell/conexant card.
I have a few posts here as to how to fix this card:
http://www.tek-tips.com/gthreadminder.cfm/lev2/8/lev3/57/pid/538but mostly in this tread:
http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/8/lev3/57/pid/538/qid/193423I use the name Dividend there as well
BTW, if u want to browse thru win explorer a little (lot) faster, do as this says:

I own an HP Pavilion 6645c. Which contains an Intel Celeron Processor @ 566Mhz. The system has a Seagate 15GB 4400rpm HD (as a side note I have read in other articles that HP has been known to install refurbished junk drives in this model machine) and 256MB RAM. Hp states that the system may meet the system requirements to install Windows XP, but they have never tested it and do not recommend. Well, after checking out the system thoroughly myself I felt it was more than able to handle XP. The system used to run WIN98SE which was ok, but did not take full advantage of the 256MB RAM. Anyways, before the install I did the usual initial updates and clean ups. In case your wondering the system was Upgraded not clean install which I agree with all of you that that is the best way to go about it, but the system belongs to family memebers who know nothing about computers, hence they requested I did not do a clean install. So I updated the BIOS to the lastest version which HP recommends if you choose to run XP. I also used Norton Util to clean the REG, and Disk. Anyways to simplify a complex story, the system was pretty much unstable after the upgrade. The BIOS HP provided was absolute junk, and made the system even more unstable than before. I also upgraded the Multimedia KeyBoard with the driver HP SPECIFIED FOR XP, and get this.......IT MADE THE SYSTEM SO UNSTABLE THAT IT TO ME 10 MINUTES TO OPEN THE START MENU. I HAD TO ERASE THE DRIVER TO MAKE THE SYSTEM USABLE. I called HP tech support about this issue and they were completely useless, and told me that there F-UP would cost me 30 dollars to fix. I DON'T think so. As of right now I have been able to keep the system somewhat stable, but it still has too many problems. HP may try to pass off that b-sh** that its not compatible, but the system is based on an Intel I82810 MOBO which INTEL THE DESIGNER has tested and certified for use with XP. Its a good thing HP makes printers otherwise the would be truely FU**ED! Because of this I will never buy and HP computer again, nor would I recommend my worst enemy to do so. Even worse yet, HP and Compaq are about to merge so that means Compaq will now be corrupted. Please ADVISE DON'T TRY THIS INSTALL IT'S NOT WORTH THE HEADACHES!
