Comment:

I need to support an old Win98 Server while traveling. I carry an Acer Netbook loaded with XP. Is there any way to enable XP to run the Win98 Netwatch.exe utility? Or is there some third party utility that allows the same login and functionality for maintaining a Win98 server? XP gives me errors regarding SRVAPI.DLL and KERNEL32.

Any help much appreciated.

Have you tried enabling windows 98 compatibility?

It's not guaranteed to work but it is worth a shot.

Right click on executable > properties > compatibility.

I have tried setting Win98 Compatibility Mode. Seems to make no difference.

When I try to run netwatch.exe I get the error message "The procedure entry point ConvertToGlobalHanle could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.". I think the KERNEL32.dll it's referring to is XP's.

Files copied from Win98 to XP c:\mydocs\netwatch.w98\:
NETWATCH.EXE
SVRAPI.DLL
KERNEL32.DLL

Is there no Win98 emulator or something straightforward like that?

FYI: Netwatch.exe is rated as an undesirable program. Would you drop it once you read THIS?

The netwatch.exe I'm referring to is a network utility that came with Windows 98. As far as I know, the "undesirable program" you mention is something else with the same name.

Well if you wanted to you could setup a virtual machine, but it seems like a lot of trouble.

I'm not sure if this will help or not:

Alright - instead of using netwatch.exe - Try this

1. Right click My Computer.
2. Click Manage.
3. Double click Shared Folders.
4. Double click Shares, Sessions, or Open Files.

or simply create a shortcut to open XP equivalent of Windows 98 Netwatch.exe ...

"C:\Windows\System32\Compmgmt.msc

Duh - I didn't see Judago post when I posted my reply. Judago & my post are essentially the same. Once again please let us know if this works for you.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, I'm trying to manage a Windows 98 server over the internet from an XP netbook (while traveling). With my old Win98 desktop workstation running netwatch.exe (uses SNMP (I think) & the shares ADMIN$ & IPC$), I can change target ip to the remote server, perform my management tasks and close netwatch. With XP running compmgmt.msc, I cannot change to my target ip to the remote server. Instead I get a message: "Computer \\targetip cannot be managed. This computer name is invalid.". If you see some blunder I'm doing, please reveal it.

Thanks.
