Running Processes in XP

CPU/Ram: PII, 400mhz, 384 ram

Can anyone explain how to stop running process in xp. I know how to get to them, but I dont understand what they are..and when I try to stop running process there is a msg stating "stoping running process may cause problems..

I have like 35 to 40 running process at a time which slows my computer. Some of the things I reconize and others, mostly win xp things I dont know what they are and if they are really needed to run in the background.

can someone help please. thanks and yes I know about msconfig...

Like in Linux, or MacOS X, Windows works thanks to process, anything you do is a new task or process to windows...
Like opening Word, starting network, formating a disk, etc...

If one of this process fails you can kill it and re start it ... so you can still using the OS stable. Basicaly.
