Specs: WinXP Home, 2.41 GHz/448 RAM

Good afternoon,

This is my second day with XP Home and I already have a question. I tried searching on the forum Search window but had no luck.

I have been on Win95 for eons and it finally died (the whole computer) a few days back so I invested in this XP Home edition on a Compaq computer.

When I boot up and right before the desktop opens I get a 'Runner Error' message saying:

" ... Runner file name (Compaq Connections.exe) lacks a '-' (the app id separator) ..."

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

this can be caused by backweb, an installed utility with Compaq computers to check for updates from them.

I always found it to be a hassle. You can try to disable Backweb from loading in msconfig.

AHa - - didn't take you long Phil ; )

IF you don't have backweb, see if there are any entries for Compaq Connections in msconfig. If so, disable

Hi fjb and jboy,

fjb: thanks for post but I didn't have 'Backweb' listed in 'msconfig'.

jboy: Bullseye ... you hit the nail right on the head. I disabled 'Compaq Connections' and the problem is solved.

Thanks for pulling me out of the 'fire' again. It was driving me up a wall. Glad to see you frequent this forum too.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

I had the same problem with my "HP Pavilion a810n" and "Updates from HP.exe". In my case a recent scan with "Spybot - Search & Destroy" showed up the backweb application which was listed as a possibly undesireable application. I removed it and this message started( the HP version) on startup. I used Spybot to restore it and the message stopped.

Since HP and Compaq are one and the same now, I suspect that "Compaq Connections.exe" and "Updates from HP.exe" are the same utility under different names and that it uses backweb libraries.

Hi jbissett,

Thanks for responding to this post.

I think you are most likely correct. However, if I recall it was AdAware SE that targeted it for me. Unfortunately, after I removed it, I eventually removed the 'quarantined' version of it too. Live and learn!

To get it to stop appearing at startup I unchecked 'Compaq Connections' in MsConfig startup and that stopped the error message.

Thanks and regards,

Phil
