Read the full explanation. It only contains the boot and setup files useful for diagnostic purposes. It is not a functioning operating system.

Bart's PE is great for getting in behind XP to do some problem solving and in building the disk you can add your own prblem solver programs... but the older version seems to be better (my opinion).

I sure wouldn't put in the same boat as Knoppix. As above it is really good to have as an admin tool along the lines of winternals products and others.

Just to clarify, this excerpt from Fred Langa's newletter in reference to Knoppix:
The newest version of his latest, greatest free tool deserves special attention: It's a self-contained, CD-based "live" copy of Windows XP. Like the popular "live CD" versions of Linux (like Knoppix), it runs entirely from a CD-ROM without installing anything on or making any changes to a system's hard drive.

I've had Bart's PE for a long time now... It's the front end (the boot end) of XP pro. It is NOT a complete OS as with Knoppix (which I have also).
It does provide you the ability to add your own programs when you build the cd so it is in a sense possible to contruct yourself a custom OS ... but in itself, it is not an OS.
