You can run DOS 6.22 along side Windows XP and set up a multi-boot system between XP and MS-DOS but not over the top of it, in it of with it.

MS-DOS and Windows XP are two completely different operating systems with absolutely nothing in common at all except the name Microsoft.

You will need a separate partition for DOS altogether and to read up on hos to install DOD 6.22 on c computer that already has Windows on it.

or use DOSbox, VirtualBox, VMware, MS VPC, etc. ... saves you the hassles of setting up a multi boot environment.

XP *SHOULD* set up the multiboot for you.

You can run it on the same partiition, but it'll get crowded.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

XP will only set up multi-boot when installed after the older OS.

You cannot install MS-DOS in the same partition as Widows XP as the Windows XP only does FAT32. MS-DOS only uses FAT16.

Alternatively, you could use an old clunker PC if you have one kicking around and install MS-DOS on that.

If you're not keen starting afresh... then go the virtual PC path (as suggested by Oracle).

If you start afresh; reconfigure drive with a fat16 active Primary; balance of drive Extended partition - and subdivide into at least two logical drives; use first logical-drive for XP, the other(s) for data. If wanting to share data with dos... then there must be a fat16 area for it (one the assorted logical-drives) and that can be a max of 2Gig. (the fat16 limit for dos).

I'd make the fat16 active Primary no more than 500meg - possibly much less; it depends on what you want to with dos - install any apps/utils?

You use a '98 boot disk to preconfigure/partition the drive accordingly into the dos/fat16 Primary, and the Extended partition. You can also use it to subdivide the Extended into the assorted logical-drives and preformat them too.

Install dos first then XP.

If you want XP as ntfs... you can reformat its logical-drive during setup; although I'd be inclined to leave it as fat32 in a domestic/home environment; and certainly data as fat32 (apart from dos-accessible data which would be fat16/2Gig max area).

But so much (unnecessary) effort if the reason for dos is not major... The virtual PC etc approach might be a better option? Just be sure you have adequate RAM installed to accomodate the virtual PC and the client OS (i.e. dos).

As regards putting dos in the same partition as XP...; no way... dos is fat16; XP will run in fat16 - be it a 2Gig partition or a max of 4Gig - but it's "noticeably" better with fat32/ntfs. Also XP is rather territorial about its partition space; it doesn't like sharing it with other OS (although it will share with another installation of XP - and sometimes it's been managed with '98...). And M$ strongly discourage sharing XP's space with other OS.
