Out of nowhere upon restarting my computer, I noticed that both my E: Drive (Dvd-Rom) and F: Drive (Cd-Rom) have completely Disappeared. To make matters more confusing my physical F: Drive won't even open the tray. I'm also noticing finicky behaviour with my Norton Antivirus. I figure I have been virused! I don't understand what could've happened. I haven't installed any malicious programs. Does anyone have any suggesions? I just got this computer and my drives are totally inaccessable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would disconnect the ROM on which the tray won't open.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

sickboy_xl, have to agree with you. What you describe does indeed sound like some sort of nasty. Suggest all the appropriate scans and if I were you, I'd do them in safe mode. Don't forget a possible Trojan. Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean , other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean one, A² can do the job and you can get it free @:

among other places.
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update prior to running. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.

I have run all of the appropriate scans. I have run Norton System Works and tried A2 as ED suggested to no avail. As for disconnecting the ROM on my F Drive that doesn't work, I don't understand what that would do, not to mention being a computer amateur, am not really comfortable opening up my computer and disconnecting things. Knowing myself, I'd only make things worse.

sickboy_xl, you may want to try a system restore and also probably a free Active X
On-line Spyware Scan
and remove all it finds

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Wow. How's this for strange. After my last posting I decided to call it a night and shut down. After just booting my computer after a 6 hour rest both my drives lit up like tree's, and there they were in "My Computer". Even my Norton runs smoothly. This is truly bizarre. I ran spyware scans, and have ran Norton and Adaware again, only to find nothing. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed. I hope I haven't been infected. Thanks for all your help folks. Ya never know, I may be needing it again very shortly.

Check the power plug (very carefully) on the drive that the tray wouldn't open. One of the pins might be spread a little and not making good connection. This is a very common problem, especially with 'Y' power adapters.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

I'm not sure if I scanned in response 4 XpUser4Real. I simply went to the link you provided which led me here, http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php,
and ran the scan. Everything was clean, and everything seems to be functioning normal once again. I don't know how this problem started or how it resolved itself, but for a somewhat computer illiterate person like myself I'm just happy everything is running smoothly again. Thanks for the help once again folks.
