Right-clicking freezes machine

If I right-click on ANYTHING on the desktop I get the big hourglass (that has no motion) and things just churn away on the hard drive and freeze up on the system - neither mouse nor keyboard works. They work ONLY if I do a CTL-ALT-Del to restart the machine. If I let it churn away until the screen saver kicks in and goes blank screen - when I try to awaken it I get only outline images of what was last opened on the desktop. Anyone ever have this problem? Any help is welcomed. Thanks...

Hello.
Right-click a blank area on Desktop.
Click "Properties".
Click "Appearance" tab.
Click "Effects" button.
Uncheck "Use Transitions Effects..." checkbox.
Click OK as many times as neccessary to close all open windows.
Now right-click a file to see if your problem is away.
Hope the above helps.
