All right, so, I am helping a friend with his laptop. There is a major right-click issue. When you right click a file of any sort, the menu is very delayed in popping up. The system starts to idle very high. It takes a good 30 seconds to display the menu... It is the same thing if you try to use hot keys on any files. (Like using Ctrl+C for example. There is a long delay before it will copy the files to memory.)However, if you right click program icons or the desktop the menu loads fine. The same problem exists on the laptop touch pad as well as a logitech mouse. I have ran Ad-Aware and Spybot (both updated) several times, and a fully updated Norton Anti-Virus system scan in case it was related to anything of that nature. I have also completed every windows update. The problem started out of the blue... I have also gone through and deleted all the system temp files and temporary internet files. I have uninstalled any and all programs that I do not have a working knowledge of. I also tried adjusting the page file to it's max. I have no idea at this point... Anyone have ideas?

Have you checked the running processes? It could be a case of too many things running at startup. Have you recently installed PowerToys for winXP? There is a setting in there for the responce time of the mouse. If you haven't, give it a try.
ASUS P5GD1
P-4 3.4 SOCKET 775
1G Corsaire PC400
ABIT RX600SE 256MB PCI-E

Yeah, I was thinking about taking off home edition and throwing on a copy of Windows XP 64, but my buddy is concerned about backing up all his stuff since it's a single partition and we don't have any network resources at the moment. We may end up doing a repair, but before jumping into that I'm gonna try to do a bit more research. :) Thanks though. :) Anyone else have suggestions?

I haven't installed powertoys yet, I will give that a shot, thank you! As for processes, yeah, I've been in and out of those things all day long, nothing is jumping out at me though.

All right, I just tried messing around with power toys, and there was no luck with it. :( More suggestions?

ClydeB sugested a Registry Problem, get RegsrubXP from Google. It should sort out your Registry and hopefully your prob.
If not, at least you tried!
Hope this helpsThe world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

Zorlak,
Do you by any chance have SpySweeper or NAV installed?
B4 you criticize a bigger man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, you're a mile away, and you have his shoes.

Sadly to report... I have done all of the suggested steps and the problem has not been resolved. To answer the question of whether or not I have NAV and Spy Sweeper... I do have NAV, but do not have Spy Sweeper. More ideas perhaps? (Thanks for all the help thus far.)

Hello everyone,
I agree with Clyde, that it is a registry problem.
Most likely with a shell-extension/context menu handler.
Did your friend recently install any software that added a right click option, (shell-extension/context menu handler)?
Is your friend connected to a network?
To find out which shell extention is causing the problem download ShellExView
.
It displays the details of shell extensions installed on your computer, and allows you to easily disable and enable each shell extension.Disable the non Microsoft shell extentions one at a time. If the problem isn't corrected, enable it and try the next one until the culprit is found.
Best Regards,
Mesich

Please take special care with replacing the present O/S while there is an existing problem. The problem may follow and then you are up the creek because you don't have anything to fix. My recommendation would be to solve the problem before making drastic changes. Then if you still want to change the O/S it may install cleanly.

All right, so I tried Shell Ex, still no luck... Keep in mind, the issue is not JUST right click. It is the same thing for hot keys... If I do Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+C everything sort of freezes for that 30 second duration and then it will finally copy the files to memory. I do agree it is a registry issue, but if it happens with the mouse AND keyboard, where might that be?
ClydeB, if I format the entire drive, like low level format it and then reinstall Windows the problem should carry over unless it was on the MBR or somehow connected to the BIOS... Those are the only things that are not cleared in a typical drive format, correct? I could take extra care to clear the MBR as well I suppose, but I don't see how the problem would carry over if we did choose to take such steps? If you know of a way, please explain so I will know for future refrence. :) Thanks

"ClydeB, if I format the entire drive, like low level format it and then reinstall Windows the problem should carry over unless it was on the MBR"...
I noticed a typo and wanted to be clear... It *shouldn't* carry over. I accidently left out the n't on should.
