Right click on the taskbar and choose properties. Click the start menu tab, then on the customize button and then on the advanced tab. In the box where it says start menu items, put a check mark in the box next to the line that says enable dragging and dropping. Click ok>apply and then ok again.

I checked on some posting on this problem
and I tried the directions below:

Right click Start,
then Properties,
then Customize button,
then Advanced tab,
then in the Start Menu items list,
check mark "Enable dragging and dropping".

But on mine there is no "Enable dragging and dropping".

I also loaded a tweak (no 203) from http://www.kellys-korner-p.com/xp_t... and this didn't work.

Please help

What version of XP are you using and what service pack, and are you part of a domain?

Had this happen to me just this week -
frustrated me too. Windows XP Pro Ed - Start
Menu, All Programs list, right click only
causes branch selection but no regular right
click menu. Couldn't delete, sort, copy,
paste, etc. Right click worked any where else
in the OS. I searched and found this forum,
and tried all of the above suggestions - no
help, sorry. Then I got an idea - I right
clicked the Start button (this worked) and
chose Properties. I changed to the Classic
Start menu and hit Apply. I tried bringing
up the Programs list and using the right
click - SUCCESS. I reverted back to the XP
default Start menu and miracles never cease,
the right click menu again works as it
should. What ever it was that monkeyed with
the settings of the right click menu in the
All Programs list got erased and reset to
defaults upon being deselected and then
reselected.
