Comment:
How would I manually restore a corrupted registry in XP if I only have the command line available?
I'm looking for the XP equivalent to Win98's ScanReg.

You cant if you click F8 whilst booting to go into safe mode it will give you the option of Last Known Good or you will need to use system restore in safe mode.

Bob,
The registry settings are contained in c:\windows\system32\config\software. A restore copy is contained in c:\windows\repair. Rename the one in config to software.bak and copy the software file in \repair into the \config folder. Unfortunately, this will only get you to your first installation settings. To counteract this, after I have all my settings established, I keep a copy of c:\windows\system32\config\software and c:\windows\system32\config\system to a known location in a temp folder for any bsod's that may pop up from time to time. That way when I repair the registry, I can restore to a recent date. Hope this helps.
