I have a compaq presario that is acting up. I have a restore partition, but no idea how to use it; and I have a folder of things to keep that I can't backup. How do I reinstall windows without deleting the folder? I also have an XP disc if that's the best route.

If you want to install windows without having to go back and getting rid of the useless junk that comes with compaq/hp then you might want to install xp from the disc, if you just want to create a recovery disc so that you can do a complete system restore go to the website below.

Should I just boot into dos and delete all the folders but the one? Of course, that presents a problem, the laptop has no floppy drive.
On a side note, has anyone ever laughed out loud at "floppy drive"? I mean, think about it.

I ran the recovery program on my Compaq Presario desktop by pressing Function 10 during boot. It did not erase my personal data files. Instead it put a fresh copy of Windows XP Home on and I had to reinstall most of my programs. I have learned that you have to dig into the recovery program a little to make it do a Destructive recovery.
