Is it possible to create a restore point after first initial install of XP, and so this particular point isnt erased as time progresses. Want this so that i am able to return to the very start when things go wrong. Sometimes the earliest point is after the problem occured, meaning its basically useless. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance

Hi Dave XP creates Restore Points by it self almost every day as I see it here on my computer. What I do, I create my own Restore Points when everything works fine. I name the restore point "All works fine before this Point" or, if I install a critical application I name the Restore Point "After this Point App XYZ was installed. This way, if the app screws up the machine, I always have a Point to go back. With this method I never had any kind of problems. There is also an option in XP to delete all previous Restore Points but the recent. That is good to gain some hard drive space if the space is limited. There are several ways to get to the System Restore. I go to START, HELP, Undo changes with System restore, checkmark Create a Restore Point, next, Type my Description in Restore Point Description, Create, DONE. Hope this helps. Cheers de Peter

I notice that my computer always makes a restore point before I install stuff, so I can always revert back if an install goes wrong (I usually just uninstall stuff though)

I am also very frustrated with this tool, because it doesn't allow to save a restore point so that it remains permanently. e.g., I made two restore points and installed corrupt audio drivers. of course win xp crashed and I wanted to restore a restore point, but one of those I saved was already gone! thanx god I made to points, or I would have had to reinstall the whole system, because winxp automatically continued creating restore points, not noticing that the audio drivers were corrupt, and thus overwrote one of the "healthy" points. maybe we all should change to roxio goback? but I don't know whether that tool allows to save restore points permanently, and besides, I don't like that tool, I remember installing it on win98 a year ago and it started crashing my system so I uninstalled it and don't want to go back to it

if you made 2 restore points and in the time it took you to install/test and find out the drivers were bad one restore point was gone you have not allocated enough HD space to restore points.My system makes one restore point a day and I can go back 7 days

Thanks for all the info here. I too like GoBack but find the overhead too great with it as it logs every file change meaning the hard disk rarely stops chugging away. As a previous reply stated, think its best to just create more restore points more often maybe manually, and review these each day as they drop fall away. Still think that MS could have come up with something more configurable though as with like GoBack. So a permanent point can be created and then updated as required, along with the natural ones that XP does along the way. CHEERS ALL.
