Boy am I stupid!
new computer. set it up with just the mouse and keyboard and made the restore DVDs (2) as instructed. Then I installed Norton Ghost 2003 and attempted to make drive image using Ghost like I have done dozens of times with my other XP computers--(emachines desktop and Toshiba laptop).
It got to PC DOS 7.1 and froze. I gave up on that and went to try the restore disks. that has never failed on my other machines after I have wiped the hard drive clean with boot 'n nuke. The first screen that comes up on this machine is enter DEL to setup or F12 to choose boot sequence.
So I set the boot sequence to CD first and used the eRestore DVDs to restore it. Seemed to work fine proceeded through both disks and said completed OK click oK to reboot. and I thought OK. No Dice. No matter what it comes up with PC DOS 7.1, says "operation failed" and three options 1. go to DOS 2. Go to windows 3. retry. nothing works; its just stuck there.
Got frustrated and boot 'n nuke is wiping the HD right now. and try it again. I have bad feeling that won't work either and I'll really be screwed.
But what in the heck would you do if you wanted to install a new hard drive? I tried their support. Ha! the e-mail doesn't work. They're closed except M-F 8 to 5 blah blah blah. Teach me to buy mail order.
What do you think? Thanks.

... do'nt buy any email when there are lots
of free ones about.... boot n nuke is a new one to me. I would do a proper fdisk n format first.
... making sure there ar'nt any restore
partitions of course.

Whew! Wiped it clean and the two restore DVDs I had made restored the system OK. I found out that the HD in this thing is partitioned. never dealed with that before.
Moral: read the directions before messin with something. Appears Acer includes its own Ghost type software.

It is built into the recovery process, many vendors such as Toshiba use Ghost. Normally the extra partition is a restore/diagnostic one that you do not touch (no deleting or saving to). If this was just done why did you try installing Norton 2003? It is most likely already registered in their system and will not even let you activate it.
