You don't set the resolution in the monitor. That is done in the graphics card/chip. Right click on a blank part of your screen and choose properties> settings. The slider there is used to set the resolution.
If you can't set the resolution as high as you want it may be because Windows is protecting your monitor from damage.
Your Samsung should have come with a CD. Install the driver for your model and then Windows may allow a higher resolution.
If you can't find the needed resolution you may need to update your graphics drivers.

I suggest you post the exact model # for your monitor, the SyncMaster 2233 comes in more than one model, 2233GW; 2233SW; 2233BW etc. Also telling us what type of graphics adapter you've got helps.
Either way, your graphics adapter must support the default (wide) resolution for your specific monitor type - this is not a guarantee. You also need to have correct drivers installed for the graphics adapter. If your adapter does in fact support the wide resolution, you may need to have drivers installed for the monitor & you definitely want to stick to the monitor's native resolution to avoid stretching or other types of image distortion when using the monitor.
You can find the driver for your specific SyncMaster at this page.
