Resolution problem - windows xp

Specs: Windows XP
Mum had a new computer built operating windows xp (I know - why?). We downloaded a few games (trusted site - we've used them before) and a balloon kept popping up saying the preferred resolution was (whatever - I can't remember now - I thought it was 1280 x 1024 or 7 hundred and something).
I went into control panel/display and changed the resolution to that requested. Next time Mum got out of a game, the screen was black with a box bouncing around it saying "The preferred resolution is 1280x1024 60Hz". That's all there is, no cursor, no start button, no icons, so we can't change it back.
What do I do??

Set the monitor resolution to the "native resolution" for the monitor. If you don't know what that is, check the specs in the monitor manual or go to the manufacturer's website. Gaming resolution is something entirely different & should be configured within the game itself, not from Windows Control Panel. If you're running older games, you may need to choose Win98 compatibility mode.

Thanks Mick. I'll try that.
