Name: Justin Weber
Hi,
As you might have noticed, Computing.Net was down for almost 30 hours. This was a result of a major outage at the datacenter where the site is hosted. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience, but, obviously these things are very hard to control.
Justin
P.S. Here is the story for those who are interested:
http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/08/06...

Wow....
Thanks for the update Justin....
I hope nobody was hurt...
Life's more painless for the brainless.

"...While they claim redundant power, because of the nature of the problem they had to go completely dark. This goes to show that no matter how much planning you do, Murphy's Law still applies."
Yup, no redundant power can work against a fire or worse.
Glad to hear the bright side.

BTW,
Any e-mails sent through the site (or by the site) are still not going to work. I think the host's DNS server is still offline.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but the system can't send e-mails without DNS resolution.
Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
Thanks,
JustinP.S. This also will slow down posting.

Hey,
Quick Update: I believe I have implemented a workaround so that posting is no longer affected. There is no work around for the e-mail issue.
Justin

Yeah I'm glad to see that the best computer help forum on the internet is back online!
Make sure Jesus is your Saviour!
To avoid conflict, always Google before posting.

Several other sites were also affected yesterday. I'm not sure if it was the same issue, but a major cell phone forum that I frequent said their image server was affected by a fire, so if we turned off images in our control panel, the site worked SLOWLY.
They seem to be up and running this morning also.
Glad to have CN Back!!

Hi Justin!
Yes that is the forum I was referring too.
I help people load ringtones on their phones without having to pay their providers for them. I'm a man of many talents! LOL

I would like to report that the delays I mentioned in this older thread started by OtheHill
http://www.computing.net/answers/ha...
(on my older 450mhz computer in 98SE with IE 6.x) are still there but are considerably shorter in duration today, even with Flash toggled on via Flash Switch.

Tubesandwires,
I am not disagreeing with you that restarting the server sped up the site. However, with the delays you are mentioning, I, personally, don't see how that can be (loading flash off an ad server not running on Computing.Net's server would be affected by a restart of Computing.Net's server).
Now it might be true, but, because I can't see it, my skills would be insufficient to remedy it. That may very well be the case, as I don't exactly consider myself an expert on all things web. Maybe someone else who knows more than me might have some idea.
Justin

Thats interesting. I use a website called BGIOK thats also down at the moment because of 'power difficulties'.
Is this site the only site hosted where that travesty happened or are there lots hosted there? Or maybe just its that time of year for things to start go BOOM.

Sorry I read the above replies particularly musky and yeah a fire is what's being described at the site I visit as well.
Small world huh.

The Planet was reporting this on there forums all day yesterday (Australian EST).

I kept up to date there about the downtime there.
I'm glad the my favourite Oz forum sites were not hosted there as well...

Regarding response 13.
That was just a comment, not a complaint - I fully realize there's nothing you can do about my problem, and that of others with similar slower computers, Justin.
We appreciate all your efforts.Update.
The delays seem to be the same today as they were before the outage.
In any case, how long I have to wait until I can scroll down a thread is directly proportional to the amount of text in it.

Tubesandwires,
If its that big of a problem for you, hover over an in-text ad and click the ? ... On that page, you will see something about opting out of them. That should help out load times.
Justin

There is nothing like that in 98SE with IE 6.x.
I should really start using my XP computer(s) more.

Hi,
Well, I don't know what to say, I guess you could add the ctxt.tribalfusion.com to your host file to deny it (however people do that to stop advertising, I'm not an expert on that). Other than that, I'm out of ideas.
Justin

I tried accessing a few of the longer threads on my 2.x ghz XP 3000+ computer, the fastest one I have. The delay is still there, it's just very much shorter, and easily ignored.

I am on a laptop with a VIA C7 Esther 1500MHz processor and I wizz through this site with no problems...
