OK I won't go into detail as that'd take ages. But if it's an old computers, like Pentium 1 or less, you'll need to replace everything including CPU, ram, power supply, and possibly some of your add in cards such as sound card, modem, or video card. It's no easy task for a newbie like yourself to do seomething like this. You need to buy stuff that's all matched. For example I just bought a new Asus P4C800 motherboard which uses the i875 chipset and supports the socket 478 Pentium 4 CPU. So I had to make sure I had a socket 478 CPU, and I had to buy new DDR ram because I used to have RDRAM and this board didn't support that. Hope this helps at least some.

Paul 123 are you handy.. if so you can do it your self... if i can do it you can... first you have to make sure yout case will be compatible with your mother board and if so cooy you can keep your case... what you have to ask your self is what cpu you want inter or amd the speed etc.. do you forcast to upgrade later .. and with this you go to a good reputable computer store and tell the tech what you want and need he will then make suggestions and you decide according your budjet..

For building your computer it is pretty straight foward make sure you follow your motherboard case and cpu manuals and you should be fine.. make sure you're grounded and have a well lit area and have fun... :o)
