Comment:

Right after my ASUS screen came up upon boot, all I saw were 1s and 0s being repeated over and over, nothing I could do would exit it. I then booted from the xp cd and ran recovery console, i did bootcfg, but i think i messed it up by adding something to the bootcfg list. adding that didnt work, so then i ran fixmbr and wrote a new master boot record and it fixed it, upon booting it asked which OS i would like to run, the one i added simply listed as 1, or Windows XP Pro, I need to know how to take this off the bootcfg, as there was no command to do so withing windows recovery. I think the 010101 thing was caused by adding a partition to test out lindowsos, which at every boot asked if you wanted to load lindows or windows, and since i formatted and merged that partition, then defragged, it might have caused the mbr to mess up, but i dont know if that was the cause or not. anyways if anyone knows how to take that entry i added off the list, please let me know, thank you.

Remove the offending line from the boot.ini file on the C:\ drive.

Being relatively new to the whole computer scene, I've never done it, but I know boot.ini can be viewed in msconfig with XP Pro. Just go to start>run and type in msconfig and then go to the boot.ini tab. Don't know if you can edit it from there (sorry) but I guess it's worth a shot

At the command prompt type "attrib c:\boot.ini -r". That gets rid of read-only permission.

Right click "My Computer", then "Properties". Click the "Advanced" tab, then the "Settings" button in the "Startup and Recovery" section. In the "System Startup" section, click the "Edit" button. Now remove the offending line and don't forget to save.
