Don't use the Recovery Console (Press R for Recovery Console). Bypass this option and proceed as though you are doing a fresh install. You'll be given an option to repair an existing installation.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hve you tried hitting the '1' (number one key) and then hitting 'Enter'?

To clarify the above responses, there are two ways to repair using the WinXP CD. First time you get a screen indicating a chance to repair using the console. That requires your to hit R and then you will need to use commands to repair. If you bypass that repair option you will be asked if you want to install WinXP. Yes will take you to the screen I think you are on. Entering the number one will start the process of installing WinXP on top of the existing C:\ WINNT. You will retain any files in the My Documents folder. All other files, folders, programs, updates, etc. will be replaced with whatever version of WinXP is on the install CD. If you don't want this to happen then try using the FIRST repair option.

Why are you trying to perform a repair anyway. Maybe someone here can help with the repair console, which is less invasive.

You do not say what you are trying to fix, so it is difficult to advise you on the best course of action.

As for your prompt, if you selected R (which I think you did), a scan to find what OSes you have installed has identified only 1 (1:C:\WINNT). In dual / multi-boot systems there would be more than 1.

In your case you should just type 1. It will then ask you for the admin password for that install. Depending on who set up your OS, an admin password may or may not have been set up. Usually one isn't. All you have to is to hit the carriage return key if a password was not set up or type in the password and then hit the carriage return key if one was.

This will then put you in console mode from which you can do whatever it is you were trying to do.
