Comment:
I am trying to repair xp and when I boot from a xp cd and choose repair it asks what I want to repair and the number 1 is my only option and when I choose it it says I need to enter an administrator password. I don't have a password.
The reason I am trying to repair is I get this at boot up:
c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

Obviously there is a password in the registry that needs to be satisfied. johnw's fix is probably your best bet. Good luck.
