I was running XP and ME in a duel boot setup with ME on C and XP on D this is on 2 HDDs.
I have now removed the ME drive and now had XP as C.
I went to recovery console and typed FIXMBR and it all fell over...
I went to install XP disk for a repair but the option wasn't there ... it asked me to click L to save files. Then went through an install.
Now I have what looks like XP on XP .. the original was 3.4gig now it is over 5gig??Its booting and I'm using it at the moment to send this ...but the section I'm working from has no programs, icons, or settings, that I had before.
I have a copy of my original on Ghost... so I can back track to before recovery console and over install.
So basicly I have XP with out boot setup.
I have a copy of boot files on floppy, can I just copy these into XP without having it boot , and where would they go ??
Please help ...JIM

Basically, you've lost your files and settings. It is not possible to change the partition label of an operating system partition.
Your XP was installed in D. It knew it was in D. You cannot simply change your D drive into a C drive without reinstalling the operating system. Having run setup over the top of the old XP it looks like you may have two versions of XP intermixed on your now C drive. One bootable that has none of your old settings and a non-bootable instal that has your old data and settings..
Recommended course of action at this point is check your drive for any files you may need to keep. No guarantee the working XP will be able to see anything from the non working one but it's worth a shot. Back up what you can and then do a complete format of the drive and start over.
