Restoring only the XP boot loader functionality.
1. How to restore only the XP boot loader functionality. In my case, I re-restore Win98 on c: so the XP boot file (ntldr, ntdetect.com, boot.ini) are gone. While the XP installation on other partition are intact. If I boot with the cd, choose instalI, then after setup detecting current XP partition and then give me option to repair or do a fresh install, choosing repair will re-run the whole setup process. I dont want to re-run the whole repair re-installation, because the missing files are only those three boot files. How to do this in Windows Recovery Console.
What do the fixboot and fixmbr command do. Will the fixmbr command rewrite the three XP boot file?
2. I also know that XP booting can be repaired using Manual Repair by selecting '
[ ]inspect startup environment
[ ]Verify windows system files
[ ]inspect boot sector. What I don't know is how to arrive at the menu that give option to select Manual Repair or Fast Repair. I want to only repair boot function.

Find somone that hase Xp installed get them to make you a boot disk.
You can then use a win 98 boot disk to boot to DOS and then use the Win XP boot disk and replace the ntdr, its posable that the boot.ini could varry pc to pc but you can manually edit it, look at one you just have to know the partiton its on.Good Luck
P.S Repair will work but like you sayed in over intalles everything
