I am running a network mixed with XP and Win 2000 Workstations. We connect to the Internet via the LAN. The 2000 machine are connecting to the internet fine. However every now and then the XP machine have to run a repair on the cards in order to connect. However, running ipconfig /registerdns alone works. We use static IP addresses and we use ADSL connection. Most of our machines are XP and it is really becoming a pain. The DNS settings on the XP cards are as follows:
DNS Server in order of use: Adsl ip address then Network server address.Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes - selected
Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffixes - selected
Register this connection's addresses in DNS - selected
Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration.

There is no physical way to easily repair a network card. Have you tried replacing the NIC instead of perhaps spending hours trying to troubleshoot the problem? NIC's are very inexpensive (you can get a gigabit speed NIC at Newegg starting at $10) and it wouldn't hurt to have a spare one around, anyway.

Betty is not talking about a "Physical" repair of the card. Subject heading is misleading. The term She's referring to is a repair of the "Connection" which is a software/networking issue. Betty, if you don't get a satisfactory response here try again in the networking forum.
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Repair does about 6 or seven things that you could do from the command line. You might wish to do each one to see what the composite repair function is doing.
"Ipconfig /renew
Arp –d *
Nbtstat –R
Nbtstat –RR
Ipconfig /flushdns
Ipconfig /registerdns
Attempts to renew the DHCP lease
Flushes the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
cache
Reloads the NetBIOS cache
Sends the NetBIOS computer name to Windows
Internet Name Service (WINS) for an update
Flushes the DNS cache
Registers the name with the DNS serverTip The Repair button also initiates a wireless IEEE 802.11x Authentication Restart."

this is actually an xp bug. do a search on MS for xp dropping connections and DL the patch. If you cannot find it, let me know and I'll e-mail the patch to you form work as I've had to install it several times. If you have mapped drives, do you lose connection to those as well?
