How do you use the XP disc to make a system repair? I have tried to restart computer from the cd but it just goes to the install screen. The reason is my screensaver quit working on the timer and I figured the system files need a repair.
Thanks, Jim

I think you are taking a very drastic step. If I were you I would first use system restore to a lime before the traditional Windows XP patch day (april 11).

How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 Or SP2 cd you will have to d/l sp1 or sp2 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster.

Have your XP CD handy. Go to Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes).
This is a less drastic way to repair system files.

I tried the sfc/scanow and nothing changed. The screensaver will still not start. I also removed the KB908531 file. The computer is new and the screensaver was working, the restore only goes back to 4/7, but that does not change the screensaver either. Man all I want to do is get the screensaver working properly, hehe. I leave my computer on a lot. Any other suggestions? Without doing a drastict measure! Thanks, Jim

Screensavers are no longer required to save the crt. That was the old systems.

I used to think the same way since that was what I was taught per, about vga not burning in.

I swear to you I have had three 17" monitors have burn in screens due to the screen saver which was a single stationary background.

Someone in the CRT industry lied about vga.

Hi all,

My Sony GDM-17SE2T Trinitron was made in 1996 and has been in constant use since then and does not show any trace of burn in.

But I do remember a lot of monitors that had LOTUS 123 burned into them.

If you right click the desktop to change the screensaver, what happens? Is the screensaver selected, or is "none" selected?

nothing worked, but after i went to the wabpages masterjaun suggested and left my computer started rebooting over and over again. Ended up I had to reformatt and reinstall everthing. Lost years of work because of this. I do backup but not recently.
