In Windows 2000 there was a clear way of restoring the C:\ boot sector after say an unwise Win98 installation using the repair tool on the setup disks.
Is there any way to do this in XP?
The only ideas I have are
1. Use of the recovery console (not sure exactly how),
2. Reinstalling XP over the top (will this destroy the programs though?)
3. Use of a third party boot sector backup tool.

Wondering if anyone has solved this problem successfully and could they post the details.

Easy! Well, sort of. Just boot from your CD-ROM drive with the XP CD in it. Maybe you have to make changes in your BIOS to do so. After XP setup has started (this can take some time), you can choose 'R' for repairing XP. What follows is a DOS like prompt. With the command: FIXBOOT you can repair the bootsector. Hope this helps.
