Name: DerbyDad03
I was given a homemade CD with a bunch of mp3 files on it. I do not know the original source of the mp3 files.
It seems that some (but not all) of the mp3's have an incorrect file name. For example, in Windows the filename is Bruce Springsteen - 4th of July Asbury Park, but if you play the file on the PC you hear Creedence Clearwater Revival - Born on the Bayou.
I can rename the file in Windows, but as soon as I transfer it to an MP3 player (such as my GPS or even Windows Media Player) it shows up as Bruce Springsteen but plays as CCR.
I assume that the mp3 players pick up data from within the file itself and ignore the Windows filename. I now have a number of songs listed under the wrong artist, album, etc on my mp3 players. It says Bruce but its really CCR. It says Van Morrison, but it's really Fleetwood Mac.
Is there anyway to fix these files so that an mp3 player recognizes the Windows filename that I give it or am I stuck with the problem?
Thanks!

I use Winamp to play my MP3 files on the computer. Winamp will allow you to edit both the tags very easily. Winamp is free. Just watch what you are installing. You may want to untick most of the boxes.

Rename the tags as OtheHill suggests with WinAmp...

You can also edit the tags by right click, properties.
I have no mp3 files on this corporate PC so cannot tell you which tab within the properties page but I believe you will find it easily enough.

You can also edit the tags by right click, properties.
You cannot edit the MP3 file's ID3v1 or IDV3v2 tags that way.
This why you have an all one player / tag editor like WinAmp. Or other third party apps to do this job...

The best way to rename MP3 files is to download and use the freeware "TAGMASTER"
which can be downloaded from:This tiny program displays your entire directory and sub directories of MP3 files, list them, and allows you to select and rename any number of MP3 files based on the information embedded in the files, artist, album, song name, etc.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the app you mentioned.
I recently found 2 apps that have been helping me accomplish my goal: Putting mp3 files on my GPS with the correct tag info.
Express Rip from NCH rips CD tracks, converts them to mp3 files, tags them with data from the freedb database and stores them on the SD card in my GPS - all with basically one click.
Once the files are on my GPS, I use Playlist Creator to create playlists and store the m3u files where the GPS can find them.
I'm leaving for a week long vacation in the morning, and it'll be nice to have a bunch of my CD's stored on the GPS so I can play them in the car and the hotel room.
