My custome built Win XP pro computer and my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop does the same thing! I found out that you can get access to what you want by doing this though :
Right click on "My Network Places", hit explore and try to go to the computer and directory you need to access. Then while that windo is busy, do this again a 2nd time and... wha la! "Ah! I have access!"
And if you wait long enough, that first windo will finaly respond. Then you can close it. But if you don't want to wait, end the process like you usualy do and then do this:
In the windows Task manager, go to "File" - "New Task (Run...)", and then type in "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe". That is assuming your windows is installed on your C drive. If not, then just change C to what ever drive your OS is installed on. Or... just "Browse" to explorer.exe and hit "ok".

That will bring everything back to the way it should be.

If anyone out there knows more about why Win XP does this though, please e-mail me and reply to this post. I would love to be able to just go to "My network places" and browse it without having to jump through hoops! My brother's custom built computer doesn't do this and a Win9x machine can access a Win XP machine with no problem too! So what's up with that?

Hi there,

Seem to me that your problem maybe to related to the fact that you don't have your network properly configured. I would make sure you do the following:

1. Make sure each machine has a different Ip
2. Make sure that on both machines the subnet address is the same (usually 255.255.255.0)
3. Make sure both machines are in the same domain or workgroup
4. Make sure your systems login automaticly or by using the windows login

Let me know if that works.

Jared
