With no printers attached Xp Pro detects a 'Printer' upon every startup. No specific printer is defined. WHen attempting to add using recommended, I am prompted 'Unknown printer port' and the driver will not be installed. I only can cancel. What can I do to remove this or disable?

Simply add in any printer. That's right follow the wizard to add a printer and 'connect to the first one on the list'.

Once one is installed you have 'fixed' your problem.

To clarify my first msg further: I have two printers, an HP 812C connected to a parallel port router and a Epson 785 EPX via USB. Even with these two printers installed and working properly I still get the New Hardware Wizard at startup. With these two printers disconnected I get a New Hardware Wizard at startup. With the network cable detached I still get the New Hardware Wizard prompt at startup as well. If I try to install either using recommended or add manually, it will first advise there is a problem with the install, then it will advise 'Unknown Printer Port'. This is a problem with XP, I just need to know what I can do to eliminate it since it will not allow me to install this non-existent device.
