Removed virus now NTLDR missing

Toshiba SATELLITE

Specs: Windows XP
I removed a virus from my laptop and now the NTLDR is missing. I have only a Restore DVD Version 1.1 that's for a Gateway computer (and runs on DR-DOS) so I can't just put it in the Toshiba and use Boot to Command prompt.

I've tried other solutions (copying the NTLDR, NLDETECT.COM files and trying to copy them at the a: prompt, but no luck - it just won't read drive a). I NEED TO SAVE THE DATA so I can't do a complete restore. Any suggestions?

Please be as detailed as possible. Thanks

You can use a linux live cd to boot your system and save the needed files to e.g. an external drive or USB stick.
