I recently upgraded a system from win 98 to win XP and I've noticed in the control panel's list of installed programs that there's something called Windows XP Uninstall that's using 300MB. If I remove this will it remove XP or just the files that it is keeping in case I do want to remove it?

When you upgraded to XP it would have asked if you wanted to keep a backup to allow uninstall later. You presumably answered Y and this stuff is that uninstall info.
You can safely delete it if you are sure you don't want to go back to 98.
In passing, it's generally not a good idea to do upgrades, best to do a clean install of an OS. Many posts on this site will agree with me on this.
If it's worked OK for you then I'm glad but the fact is that, more often than not, it creates so many colatteral problems that it's just not worth it.
Summary: how to remove winxp-components like moviemaker and mediaplayer? i know they're protected by system so my question is how to selectively switch off the restore-service... ...
