Comment:

While doing antivirus scans i always notice AVG seems to scan every windows folder including the windows setup files , system volume information and dll cache

I also noticed a lot of times i found a virus it was in system volume information
does this have anyhting to do with system restore?

If i dont use system restore can i delete these files?
Also dll cache?

I notice AVG spends a lot of time scanning these files making the process take forever

I know you can delete the WinXP setup files correct?
AVG spends a lot of time scanning through there also

What is safe for deleting that can save some scanning time?

Thanks

System volume is where XP keeps the restore points. You can del them if you have no need for them but I wouldn't advise it. You may need them in the future.

due to curiousity in your post, I deleted my DLL cache and my driver cache and SO FAR have had no problems. Not to say they won't show up later. BE SURE TO BACKUP as I have to another HD. Luck.

If you don't use system restore, you can delete them. You have to reboot into safe mode, then right-click on the folder and go to properties. There should be something like admin access or sharing or services or something (can't remember, only did once long ago - basically, it's not a normal tab that comes up).

Once in there, add yourself as a user with full rights (IE: your login name), then you can just open the folder and delete everything. There might be one or two files you can't delete, but they would only be a few K, no big deal

Oh, and your dll cache is where lots of .dlls are written to. Your driver cache is a backup.

Needless to say, don't be uninstalling any existing hardware, or installing any new hardware unless you have driver disks.

If it takes too long for you to walk from one end of your house to the other end, maybe you should cut off part of the house!

Thanks for the info

I usually do not use system restore actually "disable" it
Cuts down on used resources
"Not advisable for everyone of course"

I deleted system volume information
WinXP I386 setup files and DLL cache
so far no problems

Marty: Thats exactly what im doing and im sure theres more I would like to cut off WinXP and send back to Microsoft but i dont have a box big enough to put it in ; )

Have A Great Day Everyone!
