Alternatively:-

Right click Start, the left (all clicks are left from now on!) click Properties. In the window that appears, make sure te second tab is selected (Start menu) and at the bottom of the window Start menu and Classic Start menu. Choose Start menu (ie NOT classic) and click Customize.

In the new window click on the second tab (Advanced) and at the bottom of the window you'll see Recent document. Click the "Clear List" button if that's what you want to do or uncheck the box next to List my most recently opened documents if you want to get rid of the option completely.

Click OK in both windows and you're done!
