Hello,
Could someone tell me how I could remove ALL instances of notepad.exe from XP?
I have tried renaming as well as deleting the files, but so far, have been unsuccessful. Everytime I try to delete the
program, another one magically appears from nowhere to takes its place! Also, I did hear or read something about looking in the C:\windows\system32\dllcache folder, but my drive has no such folder. I do have the "show hidden files and folders"
option selected so, even if the folder was hidden it seems that I should be seeing it if it was really on the drive. I did a search as well - looking for ANY directory named "dllcache" and did not have any luck with that either. So, if anyone has any ideas how I can get rid
of "notepad.exe" once and for all, I would really appreciate it!Thank you!
Ed.

NotePad is fairly useful.
I have read in the newspaper that NotePad produces the simplest of text documents that can
be read by most of any computer. Windows, Apple, and palm size computers.

try if notepad is in the add/remove section of the control panel. Go to add/remove windows components.
You canīt delete notepad by just deleting every file you find that could be a notepad file.
Else put in the cdrom and choose install/remove windows components there. Why not leave it there? I can imagine people removing stuff like MSN explorer (who uses that fruity like browser that anyway), but notepad?
Are you a real donīt want what I donīt use person or is it giving you problems?
Do you want another html editor to be the default html editor?

The following was copied from someone's Response
to another Post.
You will have to find the line that is related
to NotePad(if any), and remove the word HIDE.
I have not tested the following.
--------------
HOW TO REMOVE MESSENGER FROM XP:
Look for sysoc.inf in C:\Windows/INF.
open it and search formsmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
change it to
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
Now you can remove it via add/remove software.

Try UltraEdit, you can ask it to take over all instances of notepad and use it as your default text editor

I did install UltraEdit and during the installation, I asked that it take over for Notepad. It doesn't do it though! Windows XP is forcing Notepad to take precedence. It will not allow me to change which program loads via the file options settings either. I'll change it to make UltraEdit open the text files and everything looks fine. Then I will close Windows Explorer, reopen it, and Notepad has replaced UltraEdit again!
HELP!!!

Open explorer and select folder options under the tools menu. Click on the file types tab and from there you can edit what programs open the different types of files by default.

>Open explorer and select folder options >under the tools menu. Click on the file >types tab and from there you can edit what >programs open the different types of files >by default.
Um... That's what I just said I did. It's fine until I close Explorer. As soon as I reopen it the setting I made which uses UltraEdit is replaced with Notepad again. It will NOT remember any settings made with under the file type option...

I don't know why you can't see the \system32\dllcache folder because it should be there by default. There are ways remove or reduce it, usually done to save on HD space, but this is something you would have had to have done deliberately, it would not normally happen accidentally.
Run the Windows System File Checker,
Start/run sfc /scannowTo get rid of notepad for ever you're on the right lines by looking in dllcache. What you need to do is rename your chosen text editor to notepad.exe then copy it to both the dllcache and system32 folders overwriting both the original files.
If you ever run sfc in the future you may have to go back and redo this.
