Hey
Man you are asking for a major education!
First of all I can help you rid a LOT, but to say all, I can't.
First thing to do is click on your HD and then do a disk clean up.
Then explore your main partition/your name/local setings/temp/temporary internet files/ delete all.
Next go to the history file and delete all.
That sould do it if your main partition is C:
If not repost

You can use a program such as Tracks Eraser Pro to remove the contents of hidden files.

In Windows there is a protected file named index.dat which lists every web page ever visited.
The file grows to an enoromous size. After two months in one of my PC's index.dat was 242 MB.

It can't be deleted but some programs such as Tracks Eraser or Smart Protector will empty it.

Clearing the History, Cookies, and Temp Internet Files caches doesn't do the trick. It needs a proper solution.

Killer - sorry it can't be done unless you invest in vastly expensive forensic software. It would be a lot cheaper to replace your hard disk then physically destroy it.

However you can delete History and Index.dat files so that John Doe will have a heck of a job recovering them.

Here's a tip on Index.dat files http://www.g4tv.com/screensavers/features/275/Sarahs_Windows_Tweak_Delete_Hidden_Surfing_Tracks.html

Then you should run a prog like Window Washer to overwrite deleted files.

Good luck

Ccleaner to clean out all the rubbish including the Index.dat files. For example both 'index, dat files on my system never get any bigger than 16kb

Hi
while not 100% effective as above states for fbi etc,
try
www.ccleaner.com, and look up mutilatefile wiper prog , free space cleaner.

this should be secure enough for normal users.

You could do:
A disk wipe to military standard, re-install everything, then do an image of the new install. From that point on, when you want to kill all, do a military standard wipe then re-install the image. Make sure to keep all of your personal data (pics, docs...) on another drive

That's as close to 100% effective that you will get... and even with that... it's not 100%

If you decide to use a third party clean up program be aware that they ALL miss SOMETHING.

On one hand, there always will be Skeletons on your HD.

On the other hand, it's not just the HD, it's also Mobile phones, USB flash drives, and even music players

IMO Nuking the HD is the most (and only) sensible way of erasing your precious data!

Justme - BOTH index.dat files?? There are a lot more than that and some are hidden system files so are protected whenever Windows is running. The most comprehensive is the index.dat file in ...\History\History.ie5\... which can grow to mammoth size, in my case it was 8mb of just url's visited and that's a lot of url's. Google index.dat, there's a lot of reading and a lot of claims that this or that download will delete all index.dat files. If you rely on any of these I suggest you find out where Index.dat files are located, run the download then go back to check the file has been deleted. There are also downloads to view index.dat files, I use SuperWinSpy and was surprised at what Internet Explorer and Windows was saving. I now run Firefox.

Good luck
