I'm runnign into an issue trying to connect to remote desktop to my PC. This only happens every now and then:
I see the login prompt and i type in my credentials, the login window goes away and i see a blank background for about a minute or so, and then the remote desktop screen closes without anythign happening.
I can fix this only by restarting the computer.
Anyone has ever seen this issue or knows a work around? I tried restarting the terminal services but apparently that can't be restarted without a reboot, correct?
If anyone knows a workaround to this issue or can provide more information or guesses please let me know!

See event viewer logs. I suspect a service is being stopped (maybe with good reason). Might see why, if no good reason then set service to restart.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Your issue may very well be related to too many applications running on the host PC.
Go into RDC's Options, Display and reduce the Color to 256 colrs first. If it lets you in then exit the un-needed applications, disconnect, change the color back to 16 bit and reconnect.
Note: Higher color is not needed as you won't notice the difference and the more resources being used to display the host PC will only slow down it's responses. If reducing the color does not get you in then change the display size to something less than Full screen incrementally until you are able to connect and close the un-needed applications, disconnect and then reset to full screen.
If your host PC has no running applications then the above will not help you connect to it.

hmm wow! you're right, it seems like it works when i lower the settings.
I don't understand though, it's got 2GB of ram and i only have 1.1GB RAM in use. I closed most applications but i can still only connect at 800x600 or sometimes at 1024x768.
Any ideas why? 1GB free memory should be enough for resources (note that if i restart the PC i can connect fine at any resolution)

It doesn't have to do with RAM. It is system resources. Restarting the PC will clear or minimize the used system resources.
Try just changing the color to High Color (15 bit) as it may be enough to make the difference.
You can also adjust the items within the Experience tab until you find a happy balance.

hi again
thanks for the responses.
Any other guesses? I'm just seeing this issue happening with a fresh restart as well. And it's a 2 week old installation of windows (ie, not too much stuff on my system yet).Lately when it happens i have to connect at 640x480 at 256 color, and then after that i can go up to 1024x768 at 256 color but not more. I've disabled all other items such as sound, printers, themes etc as well.
Any guesses? I don't see anything in the event viewer either!

The monitor that you are looking at is it larger than 17" or larger than the one you are trying to remote control?
Try setting to "Full screen" and it should automatically adjust to the size of the host's screen.
Beyopnd the above I have nothing more.
