I am having an issue with remote desktop. Everything worked fine with it until I ran Windows update a few days ago. The update was a 2.8mb update for Internet Explorer. After I ran the update, I get an error that says this:

Client could not connect to remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.

I know that remote desktop is active because I double checked to make sure that it was turned on and that I had access for it. Also, I took a look at the services and noticed that the terminal services service was started, yet it was set to manual instead of automatic. I changed it and reset my computer, but that didn't fix the problem.

Any ides???

Something else I forgot to add. I am trying to make the connection over the internet using a VPN connection to my home network. I can ping my machine and I can access files remotely, remote desktop just doesn't work anymore. Also, I get the same result if I try to make a remote desktop connection from a PC on my local LAN.

Andy: other users of Remote Desktop had these comments:

1. "DMZ Host, make sure it's turned off. (set to 0)."

2. "experienced this issue with the standard 4 port Linksys router (with the latest firmware). It also crashes your browser if you're using the IIS-based TS client. To test a theory, I swapped the old Linksys out for a new 802.11b Linksys router, and configured it the same way. IT WORKS GREAT!!! Definitely a Linksys issue."

3. "finally gotten my remote desktop to work, and all I did was upgrade my firmware (on the router). I had version 1.23, now I have 1.42.6. If any of you still have any problems, I'd suggest patching the firmware."

4. "I have found the remote desktop uses port 3389 to make the initial connection and then uses random ports after that. The only way that I've gotten remote desktop to work so far with my router is to open the router's DMZ to the computer that you are trying to connect to."

let us know what worked for you...
