ok...i used to have everything working fine for my remote connection but all of a sudden it stopped working and i didn't change anything. i have tried everything i can think of. i even redid all the settings. i enabled it in control panel/system. i have added my user account to the allowed list. i have forwarded port 3389 to my internal ip just like before. i even completely disabled windows firewall. i even did a ipconfig dns flush. everything is exactly as it was before. can anyone help?

If "everything is exactly as it was before" then it is still working as exactly as it did before. This is logical.

Therefore, if it is not working exactly as it did before then, logically, something must be different.

Think about it some more to see if you can determine what that missing piece of the puzzle might be.
Quite often it is the obvious things we overlook.

Otherwise, can you define what is experienced in relation to your statement "but all of a sudden it stopped working"?

For example: You were connected and in the middle of your session you received an error message that stated something like:
"Since you have made no changes in this system within the specified time limits then access is now terminated."

Regards,
Bryan

when i say it no longer works i mean i can no longer connect from any location. i originally thought that my mcafee firewall changed something so i uninstalled it. i actually uninstalled all my mcafee software and sent in for a refund because it was bogging my system down and was a piece of junk. i bought system works from norton instead but there is no firewall on there so i do not think norton changed anything. besides those two pieces of software there is nothing new or altered on my system.

i noticed one other thing. i redid everything again and i tried connecting from my other computer on my home router. i can't connect when i enter my ip address but i CAN connect when i enter my internal ip address of 192.168.0.2 . i still can't figure out why i cannot access my computer from the internet. i ran the new connection wizard again to setup and allow for incoming connections and vpn packets so it can be accessed via ip but still no luck.

Have you verified the EXTERNAL IP of your router? If you are on a home connection you most likely have a dynamic IP - however it may rarely change. Mine changes only about every 6-12 months, if that.

If you are using a dynamic domain name (e.g. no-ip.com) make sure that it is pointing tot he correct IP address for your router.

What brand of router are you using?

DLink has an option in the router programming to allow one IP direct access to the net. This has to be set for your unit.

If your router is different then check the HELP file in the router setup program.

i have a netgear router, model wgr614 v4. FJ, i do not see such an option for direct access to the net.

i have indeed checked that my ip address did not change. i have the feeling that something in my policies (under admin tools) is changed but i checked and cannot find anything there. i still cannot get this to work.

I highly doubt this is a router problem since you said it was working before and suddenly stopped, which means port 3389 was already forwarded. However since you've messed with the settings, you could have now made this a router problem. Did your IP address of you local LAN change? (Meaning is it still being forwarded to the correct ip)? Close all running programs and try again (especially Norton). Also, boot to safe mode with networking and try again. Did any of that work?

Jiggly45, you need to be specific in your responses. Previously you said "i can no longer connect from any location", but you did not state was error messages you received. There are a few different error messages that can happen when trying to connect through RD. That error message can help to determine where the problem is.

By the way, Norton System works does have a type of Firewall. It's called Worm Protection (or something like that) and it can block internet traffic going out from the computer. As RD is a 2 way communication this could be the problem as well. Try turning that feature off.

And the suggestion FJ made was to put your computer into what is called a DMZ. This is a bad idea. You just want to forward port 3389 as you said you have done.

Try this as a test. Go to this page http://www.canyouseeme.org/

The page will display the external IP address of your computer. Enter 3389 into the input back and test if port 3389 is open.

i finally got it to work. thank you for all your help everyone. i don't know what changed it though. all i did was reboot the computer in safe mode with networking, as suggested, but i still could not connect. instead of getting the connection error/timeout i got a message saying that the session was ended by the remote computer. when i rebooted the computer into windows normally i tried it again and voila, it works one again. i changed NOTHING. all i did was try the safe mode option and then try windows normally. i have no idea why it is working now but it is. thanks everybody
