I am trying to use the Remote Desktop Connection to connect from my Laptop to my Desktop. To make it simple, I have used a Cross over cable and able to connect using Remote Desktop Connection from my Desktop to my Laptop but not from my Laptop to my Desktop. Getting error - "The client could not connect to the remote computer. .....". Confrimed there is no firewall or antivirus running that could cause this problem. Also made sure I am able to ping each other just fine. All TCP ports are open. Is there anything else that I need to confirm?

Please let me know.

Thank you

Did you enable the Remote connection on the Desktop? Is the Terminal Service Service started?

Your desktop must be running XP Pro for it to work properly, and you have to make sure you setup the remote users on the desktop that are allowed access to the pc -
Start>right click 'My computer'> Properties> Remote
In the remote tab there will two things (if you run xp pro) Remote Assistance in blue and remote desktop in blue. Underneath the remote desktop, put a check mark in 'Allow users to connect remotely to this comptuer'
Click select 'Remote users' > Add > Advanced > Find now - Add the users that you want to have access remotely (Administrator or your user account) Click Ok, Ok, apply, Ok.
Now try it again. Also make sure you can ping the computers by name. You can also try using the IP of the desktop instead of the name in the RD Client.

yup!

Jennifer: I enabled the Remote Desktop and prolly that's why I am able to use the Remote desktop connection to connect from Desktop to Laptop. I don't have any problem there.

How do I verify whether the Terminal Service has started or not? Do I have to have that enabled b4 trying Remote Desktop?

Josh: Like you suggested I added the user logins that I am trying from both the Laptop and Desktop. I was able to ping using both the workstation names and IP addresses. However, I am still unable to use the RD to connect from Laptop to the Desktop and still getting the same error.

Your helps would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Are both running XP Pro?

You cannot RDP to an XP Home machine using Windows RDC. You can use Remote Assistance though.

Btech: I just confirmed that Windows firewalls are disabled in both my Laptop and Desktop. I also have same user and password setup in both system with admin access. Also confirmed RDP port is not blocked. As you suggested, I also checked Remote desktop option in Windows firewall exception and advanced-NIC settings.

Is there a group policy which might be disabled that I could check?

Thank you.

Also have you tried using the RD client (to connect to the desktop from the laptop) with the IP of the desktop instead of the name and tested?

Jennifer SUMN and Josh:
You guys made my day! Like you suggested, I just found Terminal Services in the Desktop was Disabled. After I enabled it, it's working like a charm.

Thank you all for your support.
