simple question...
If i reinstall XP the system settings will be
restored but my files and programs will still
remain?? correct??

If the reinstalling routine goes smoothly, then your applications, data and settings will remain intact.

Reinstalling XP should go smoothly - and all your settings, programs will be preserved (as long as you select "Upgrade"). I had to do this a couple of times after installing the XP service packs which caused some software incompatibilities.
