Hi, I know that when reinstalling Win XP in C: drive and My Documents are in the same c: drive it results erased, but my question is: If My Docs is located in the d: drive? an I format and install XP in c: drive, what happens? Am very chicken to test it myself.
Hope you're not :) Thanks

If you format C drive and My Docs is on D drive then nothing will happen to My Docs. You will erase everything on C drive but nothing will be touched on D drive. Better yet, burn My docs to a CD just to be sure then format.

I suggest putting My documents, Favorites, Email, and even installing new software on another drive.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

If you install XP it does not erase your My Docs. Only if you format will My Docs be gone. What will happen is you will be denied access to My Docs after the new install. This is true if you have the files on d:

Reason is your new install means a new sid. Since the folder/files was stamped with your old sid, and it doesn't compare to your new sit, you are denied access.

Solution is to take ownership of the folder/files which is done thru the security tab.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

"If you install XP it does not erase your My Docs."

There's a couple of variables here, regardless of what folder (Windows, My Documents, Documents and Setting, Takeru's Stuff....you name it) if your system drive (physically) or partition (logically) is separate from your data drive or partition, you *are* (99.9%) safe from any and all resultant data loss.

However, if you do an *overlay* (NOT the repair) install of XP and your system drive/partition houses by default your Windows and "My Documents" folder, both will be overwritten and you'll lose the data.

Since we are dealing with multiple drives or partitions here, your data ought to be safe and intact after the reinstall.
