My sister has a dell laptop with Win XP Pro.
The monitor died and she has biz data on there she needs, so I pluged a desktop monitor to it and everything went well until I seen that the win xp disk had to be in the drive to boot-up. So I booted directly from the disk to try an do a 'Repair' so it would boot without the disk.
When I attempted the repair it prompted for an Admin Password. We never put one on there so we were stumped. We tried various psswrds
but none took. So I proceeded to look through the list of files and accidently deleted the 'Profiles' file. Now it wont boot to a screen at all. I was hoping xp would just rebuild the file but it didn't.(I know, stupid, stupid - I had been up for days, was on my way to bed but she just had to have it now)
Is there a way to get that file back in there?
or Reinstall the xp os exactly on top of itself so all her other biz data would be there intact and accessable ?
thanks,
kevin

U can install xp in another dir not windows but maybe tempwindows or somthing. or if u can boot into safemode with smd u can copy the file from the cd

Insert XP disc,boot from disc.
on the "welcome to setup"
choose "To seup windows xp,choose Enter".
F8 to agree
now press R this will auto start the repair without any password questions and will leave all files you have intact.

That's what i did and i went ahead and tried it again, but... (it's hammer time)

Just to clarify on this screen http://www.theeldergeek.com/images/XP%20Home%20Setup%20Graphic/CC.gif
DO NOT CHOOSE REPAIR!
choose first option "To setup windows xp,choose Enter", Then F8 Then R
Good luck

I booted from CD,
chose first option 'ENTER'
f8 on the next screen
then on the next screen there is no option for 'R', i pushed 'R' anyway and nothing happens.ANTEC Case

No.
That screen you speak of (with the windows prompt) sounds like the screen I got at the very start of this mess when I ignorantly deleted the 'Profiles' file.
This is what I get now:
After "I agree" F8, the blue setup win screen with options -to setup windows on the selected partition, press ENTER
to create a partition on the unpartitioned space, press C
to delete the selected partition, press D
Then it shows the path:
C: Partition 1 [Unknown] 28616MB (28615FreeNow if I let it boot normal without the CD it boots to a screen which gives you options like 'Safe mode', 'prompt in safe mode' but no matter what I choose it brings me to a blue screen which says
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUMEI know it's difficult and sometimes frustrating helping someone trouble shoot a pc without actually being there, THANKS CLOVER !
What I'm thinking att this point is connect the laptop to my desktop with a crossover cable to retrieve the biz stuff and then just format it and start from scratch- would I need a hub or anything else ?
Just a crossover cable ?ANTEC Case

You could try rebuilding the boot.(To replace the C:\WINDOWS so you can repair.
Boot from disc.Hit R for recovery console.
When it asks for admin password just hit enter if no password was set.Type in bootcfg /rebuild
It will say add installation to boot diskType y , enter
It will then say enter load identifier
type C:\WINDOWS
hit enter
It will then say enter OS load optionstype /fastdetect
reboot it should now be listed for the repair option.
If you have problems with admin password to only way to clear the password is to remove the cmos battery on the motherboard.

you can also try fixboot and fixmbr in recovery console.
using a crossover cable I think the two machines have to be switched on.i have done this procedure therefore I cant really say.Only way I know would work is to get a "drive caddy" that will take 2.5 inch drive i.e laptop hard drive.
you take the hard drive out plug it into the caddy then connect via USB to your running p.c

I think the HD is toast along with the LCD.
Hard drives are so cheap I'll just buy one and an LCD and fix this. Thanks again,
I tried everything you said and I managed to get into windows in safe mode but most files were missing and the ones that were there were unreadable.
TOAST!

You are welcome.
well you can still format that drive and retrieve say 95% of what was on it.get back if u want info how to do it.Its easy.

Or you can just do this. Take the harddrive out of the laptop. Buy a converter cable (laptop harddrives have 4 less prongs because they use a different power source) and hook it up to your pc. If you have Win XP or Win 2k, you can look at the harddrive (win XP will auto detect the new hardware) and retrieve what files you need off of it. Then just reformat the whole harddrive, install XP or whatever operating system on it, and then put the files back on. Unless you feel like spending hours trying to pull off old profile information, then just get what you can and remake it. Good luck.
