It started with "Windows/system32/config/system corrupt or missing". I removed the Hard drive retrieved my files and saved to a external hard drive. I reinstalled the hard drive and used the OS disk, supplied by Dell when I purchased the unit,to format the drive. It appeared to be successful. I reinstalled XP using the same disk. It appeared to install without to much trouble. When it finally booted up
, the "Welcme" screen appeared. I clicked on my Icon & windows asked for my password (during setup I never saw a screen that prompted me to add a password). I tried several old passwords with no luck. When I start in safe mode the "Administrator" Icon appears on the "Welcome" screen. When I click on it, it also asks for the password (during setup I left the Adminisrator password blank). How can I get to a screen that will let me install/change passwords? I have attempted to reinstall XP but I get the same result. Can anyone help?

Did you enter an Administrator password the second time?

Have you tried just hitting Enter without typing a password?
If you've already backed up your data, you risk nothing by starting over.
This time, instead of doing an over-the-top install, reformat BEFORE installing. Then, set an Administrator password when prompted and write it down.

During the second attempt, I was not given the opportunity to enter an administrator password.
I did try to hit enter without a password, I got the same error meesage as with the not valid password.
I was contemplating formatting again. But I was hoping for a faster/easier solution.
