OS: XP Home SP3
CPU/Ram: Sempron 2800+ / 2GB
Product: Custom
Comment:

I decided to re-install my sisters Operating system as it's been on for about 3 years and actually survived a motherboard swap.

The re-install went well until I had to install the ATI drivers for her X1650Pro. I tried the new drivers, old drivers with and without bundled software, installed the driver files manually, double checked that the card was in firmly and tried with fast writes on and off but am still greeted with the same problem. EVERY boot it will get past the XP loading screen, you see the cursor for a bit and then either the system freezes or you get a corrupt screen resulting in a reset loop until it hangs again.....

Are the ATI drivers just hideously bad or is there a problem somewhere on the system? I installed all the chipset drivers and everything else works fine. There are no problems without the drivers and the image seems fine.

Her system:
ASUS K8V-X SE
VIA K8T800 chipset
Sempron 2800+ (A 3000+ A64 is in the mail)
2GB DDR400 RAM
HIS 512MB X1650Pro.

What could be the problem?
I have a vanilla 6600 waiting if I cant get this ATI going. Now that I think about it, I dont think I've EVER had an ATI install go smoothly, so very, very frustrating.

Check the add/remove section and see if some Intel video drivers were installed during the chipset driver installation. If there was then tose Intel driver files need to be removed.

No other drivers are on the system. It looks like a hardware problem, but nothing in the computer has changed... I might test the graphics card in another system just to check.

What does it mean "...installed the driver files manually..." ?

Anyway, the driver file you downloaded from ATI web site or the expanded files resulting from the execution of the driver file might be corrupt.

Visit ATI again and download a fresh copy of the driver file for your graphic card.

Go into Safe Mode, uninstall ATI drivers and all other stuff related to ATI from Add/Remove Programs. For this purpose, please read ATI documentation as to how to uninstall all ATI drivers and stuff from your PC.

Rename the folders in C:\ATI\Support to C:\ATI\Support.old and C:\Program Files\ ATI and ATI Technologies whatever to ATI Technologies.old where C:\ is the Windows installation partition.

Then restart your PC and install again the ATI drivers by just clicking on the .exe file downloaded. No manual installation necessary.

After installation completes and Windows restarts, you can delete the two folders renamed support.old and ATI Technologies.old.

Hope the above helps.

I have a similar setup as yours. ECS P4M800PRO-M2 (VIA chipset) and X1650XT 256mb AGP card.

Try the following :

1. Download and run Drivercleaner :

http://downloads.guru3d.com/Driver-...

It seem that you can't boot into windows, try install and run it in safe mode. (Not sure if this can be done?)

2. Reset BIOS to its default setting and boot up.

3. Uninstall motherboard/vga driver in safe mode, boot to desktop, download and install VIA Hyperion Pro drivers Version 5.12A :

http://downloads.guru3d.com/VIA-Hyp...

Reboot, download vga driver only(version 8.9) and install. From ATI's official site : http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/...

Hope this help.

Did you install the VIA chipset drivers? I haven't used anything VIA for quite awhile but I seem to recall there is a choice concerning the GART drivers. Can't recall the details and maybe that doesn't apply because my last experience with VIA was with Win98se. Just thought it may jog something with you.

Also, ATI drivers may require a newer version of DX then the one on your CD before installing the graphic drivers.

If you are trying to install ATI Catalyst Control Center, this requires you to install .NET Framework 2 before you install Catalyst CC.

I originally tried to install drivers only without any software, then I tried with all the other ATI stuff like the control center etc and installed the .NET Framework. I did install the VIA drivers. I forgot to update Direct X, so hopefully that will do the trick.

I installed the drivers "manually" by skipping all the ATI setup and just using the widows installer and point to the driver files.

Meh, I gave up on the X1650 and installed a 6600 I had as a spare. I put on a bigger heatsync and installed it. Drivers went on first shot without any pain and its running happily overclocked. Not as good as the X1650Pro but since my sister dosent play much games it wasnt worth the trouble and my sanity. Nvidia drivers are so much better!

If I were you, I would go on and try to install ATI drivers. This is the only way to learn things about PCs, both hardware-wise and software-wise.

Anyway thanks for posting back you solution.

I'm quite comfortable with my knowledge of computers. I'm sure I can get it going but right now I dont have the time or patience to get it going. Holidays are coming up so I'll try again then.
