Somehow my registry got messed up. I tried to reinstall xp but that did not help. What is the best way to do a clean install. Should I format C and then let the cd do its thing? Thanks!

Yes, a clean install would be the best way. Just format your hard drive, boot from the CD, and setup will begin automatically.
Here's a tip by the way; save the WPA.DBL file from your Windows/System32 directory on a floppy disk and then copy it back to your new installation of XP and reboot. Now you will not have to activate again, provided no hardware has changed.

Totally unnecessary to reformat and reinstall for registry errors. For one thing did you check restore to see if you can go back far enough to when registry was correct? Registry makes it's own backups as well. Did you try repair on Windows installation CD? If you need to reinstall, simply rename the Windows folder to say Win XP, reinstall, reinstall your programs, the files will be there and then delete old Windows when done. No one reformats any more.
