is there any way that i could re-install my XP without hte use of the cd as my CD drive doesnt work.
i know that i can do a network boot to get the files from a shared area but i think it is way too difficult for me to do.

Won't work as xp will normally only recognize the machine it was installed on.

how was os installed on this machine before? do you have a directory named I386? most of your xp-install files are in that directory. most corp pc's copy files from network to that directory, and do the install from there. so they won't have to have the cd, anytime they want to change something on the pc.

I'd have to agree with the above... as long as the Boot.ini is the same...
everything is pnp nowadays... that goes for motherboards too... and XP is good at picking up drivers for components... and the drivers on the HD controller control the HD... so... give it try...
you may want to locate manufacturers drivers afterwards though...
