Reinstall XP Pro, All Product Keys Dont Work

Specs: Windows xp
I had a small issue with my XP Pro...so I put in my cd and of the three options, I selected the first one...hit enter and on the next screen I hit R to repair it....after it was done doing its thing, the computer restarted and showed the installation screen.

When it got to 33 percent...a window opened asking for the 25 product key.

Here is the problem...The real XP Pro cd, I lost but I had made a backup...which is the one I used to do the repair...so I entered in the key code that I wrote on the cd...but it didnt work...it said "product key not valid".

I dont know why it does not work...so I tried the following. I downloaded the "Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder" installed it on a 3.5 floppy disk, then I put the cd "MiniPE" cd and turned on the laptop...I worked my way to a explorer type app and selected the A: drive...clicked on the Keyfinder app...it didnt find anything on its own..until I clicked on browse and selected the C:windows folder...then it found a XP Pro Key code. I tried to point the keyfinder app to a few different folders but none worked.

I restarted the laptop with the copied xp pro and entered in the key code that keyfinder found...but still did not work.

I dont understand what is wrong. I thought maybe it was because the key code I had was either no good or bad...so I went online and bought a OEM Xp Pro cd...I received it today and entered in the product key from the back and STILL does not work.

Do you think I need to install the NEW xp cd I just bought first and then try the new key? I read somewhere online that it does not matter...just that the key code need to be new.

Im also trying to keep from doing a fresh install because there are important files/pic's of family members not here anymore...that I dont want to lose.

I just dont know what or why it does not work. Im sorry for writing so much...was not sure if anyone would understand if I didnt explain everything.

can you boot into safe mode (press F8 at begining of boot)
copy all your docs to external hard drive
then format ?

You might need to make a barts cd to run ntbackup. The do a clean install with any cd that works. Then apply the backup.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I cant go into safe mode because everytime the laptop restarts it loads the install screen and then asks for the key code.

I dont want to do a fresh install because this will erase everything...I should be able to enter in one of the key codes I have...but I cant...I need help.

Did you even try the code that is on the sticker that should be attached to the computer? If it still doen't work then you must look at doing something else.

I think that your problem is that you are just using the wrong disc. Either way you need to be able to save your pictures first.
Since all the options above didn't work for you then you are left with only one. You will need to remove the hard drive and slave it to another computer in order to copy your files and all off it.

Once you have done that then use the new xp pro cd that you just bought and do a reformat and clean install using the license that came with the cd!

You used a copied CD of an actual XP CD ???
I wonder if copies would really work with any Product Key.

Microsoft would not like people using copies of their products.

The problem may be that the computer was loaded using a Volume License edition. ..If so the the key used to install and the COA are different. And so is the cd you are using.

This problem never comes up until a person tries to do a repair and the computer is looking for the original cd and the original key...You have the key but not the cd the factory or original installer used.

If you did a clean install your copy should work with the COA sticker. A clean install will also work with the new cd and attached sticker.

But to use the key Jelly bean found requries that you use the cd that the factory used to originally install the OS.

So as above a backup to a second hard drive and a clean install.

I make no promises but if you post the make of the computer and can find the version of the xp installed perhaps someone has an easier work around.

Perhaps canceling the repair and fixing the problems on the laptop might be quicker.
