Re-install XP failure

Comment:
I need to reinstall XP but though I have put the XP install disc in the CD-ROM but it makes no attempt to read it (no light).
I select CD/DVD from CMOS menu but nothing happens.
The XP disc will boot if used on my wife's laptop, not that I tried it any further than that, so I think the CD itself is good.

Does the CD drive read ANY CD?
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

The machine will not start at all, that's why I'm trying to reinstall XP. The message starts "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully..."
No options work from the five presented.
So, from start up I select F11 which takes me to a small blue menu screen from which I select "boot from CD".
I do not know therefore whether it will read any CD as I can never get to the point where it might want to try!

Boot on a DOS floppy with CD support and see if the CD drive is dead.
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.
