hi im looking to reinstall my copy of windows xp using the disk due to an ongoing problem. when i tried to install using the xp disk i got a message saying the version on my computer is newer that that on the disk and so i would have to boot the cd to install the older copy. i dont know alot about computers and so i looked on the internet about how to boot my disk and i found something which looked like i could follow it. i went into the bios setup menu and all of the boot options were in the order they would need to be in for me to boot the disk. i then restarted my computer hoping for the option which would let me boot from the disk but nothing happened. is there anything i could be doing wrong. my motherboard is an asus a7v8x-x and i am trying to reinstall windows xp home edition version 2002 service pack 1. the bios currently on my computer (i think) are asus a7v8x-x acpi bios revision 1006. any advice would be greatly apreciated thanks, robert.

(1) "hi im looking to reinstall my copy of windows xp using the disk due to an ongoing problem." Why don't you describe the problem-maybe it can be solved without reinstalling XP, and maybe it's a hardware issue which reinstalling XP won't help with.
(2) If you still want to reinstall XP:
Have you made any hardware changes to the compuetr since you've had it ? I'm not certain, but I don't think changing the bios version(if you in fact did that) would affect the XP setup disc. In any event, you should call Microsoft-they should give you a set of numbers which will allow you to reinstall XP.

Go back into the BIOS and set the CD/DVD drive as the only bootable device. Then, make sure the CD you have is actually an OS or Reinstallation CD for your model of computer.

thanks i got it working by making the cd drive as the only thing to boot. this seems to have solved my problem thanks.

You're welcome. Don't forget to change the BIOS boot options back to include the HDD. LOL

hi, before i reinstalled windows i backed up all of my information onto a disk and i have some documents and files and photos that i would like to recover but i want to know if i put the disk in to get these is there any chance that the could still contain viruses and then i would be back to where i started from. is there any way i can check if the files contain viruses before loading them back onto my computer. i backed the files up with nero back it up. thanks robert
