Reinstall on new hard drive of windows xp

Specs: Windows Vista
Hello looking for help.

I had to reinstall a new hard drive as I used the other one up at 80, now a 320. I installed HD fine. Now trying to install Windows XP from the Dell reinstallation dvd they gave me (overnighted). go through all the steps and once it setups goes to copying files, etc. upon restart the screen is black with cursor. any suggestions how I get the GUI up to finish installation?

You didn't mention whether this was a desktop or laptop., or what model the Dell was.

In most cases like this it is caused by bad hardware such as memory or external attachments printers and other USB devices still attached during installation.

Remove all but the necessities when installing the software....this means all extra memory.dvd/cd drives, harddrives and the likes. Then try to re-install the operating system...once it is installed then reinstall the removed items.

it is a laptop. Dell Inspiron 6000. I have tried several times to reinstall. There are no extra anything attached. I have a brand new hard drive and trying to install Windows XP PRO. It all goes fine until it reboots and then blank. Every forum I see says the GUI will auto pop up after it installs, but mine doesn't. I did diagnostics and everything was fine. I am at a loss
